This is Shiprock. It’s the remaining core of a long since eroded volcano. Only the harder lava survives. But it’s more than that. It’s also the stuff of Navajo and Ancestral Pueblo Culture’s religious and mythical traditions. These days it’s off limits to all but the Navajo who’s land it is on.
On the way to Albuquerque I stopped, keeping a respectful distance, for a sunrise shoot of the iconic landmark.
