Endless Varieties

Another iconic feature of Death Valley are the shifting dunes of sand found in isolated areas of the valley floor. With endless textures, patterns, shapes and shadows, they are a constant inspiration and challenge for photographers.

This image features a part of Mesquite Dunes. It’s a popular site for tourists and is usually heavily tracked by hikers (and photographers!). A great time to go is after a wind storm when all of the tracks are wiped clean. With no winds at all, we were lucky to find an isolated spot devoid of footprints.
