The Best Laid Plans!

One of the great photographic opportunities of the American west is storm clouds over (and in) the Grand Canyon. We hope for those magnificent storms that lend an additional dimension to one of the most compelling sights of the natural world. Clouds make that iconic view from the rim something special.

One of the harsh realities of photographing landscapes is that sometimes things just don’t work out the way you plan. On a recent 10 day winter trip to the Canyon I had every right to expect a storm or two. I was up for every sunrise and out for every sunset in the wind and with the temperatures hovering in the mid 20’s. Every time I was greeted by the clearest of clear days.

Oh well. It’s still an incomparable place to be. In this image I hope to convey that huge sky above the rim. It’s the way most people will see the Grand Canyon anyway!
