Tough Guy

This tough looking guy with a Napoleonic demeanor is a Pacific Slope Flycatcher. He’s probably not more than 4 inches long but he has a great hairdo (featherdo?) and that, “Don’t mess with me!”, expression. The image was captured in the extreme southern foothills of the Sierra where it meets the desert just north of Mojave, CA.

In case you are wondering… While still practicing social distancing, I can still make solo day trips and encounter far less people in close proximity than, say, a trip to Costco. On this day I had an exchange with just one person, who was wearing a mask (as was I), working the drive-through where I picked up a cold drink. (I also have hand sanitizer, gloves and wet wipes in my car)

Sleepless

It’s one of those views that you don’t forget. It’s quintessential America West. We always hope for weather to make our skies interesting and on this trip, things got very “interesting” indeed. Camping in a small tent during a powerful multi-day rain and lightning storm is not ideal but when things start to clear and you get colors and skies like this, you tend to forget all about the previous wet, thunderous, sleepless nights.

This, of course, as the late afternoon sun finds its way through the broken clouds, is Monument Valley.

Tetons, No Tetons

A late spring snowstorm blasts the Grand Tetons. Although we were there for several days, we only saw suggestions of the famous peaks. Only three weeks from summer, the storm clouds, blanket of snow and the base of the rugged mountain range made for some beautifully timeless winter scenes.

A Better Look

A Grizzly takes in the view across the autumn tundra in Denali National Park. Always alert, she’s looking after her cub while searching for a varmint lunch.

Geology Lesson

This is part of the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Central Oregon. In this section of the Monument, eroded and bare hillsides reveal their geologic history in the colorful layers.
